Omega 3 Fish Oils in Nepean ON
Omega 3 Fish Oils in Nepean
Our Nepean chiropractic patients are always asking," But Dr. Herr, aren't the fish oils from Costco the same?" The answer is NO! If you have two different bottles of fish oils sitting side by side with capsules of 1000 mg each, they are not the same.
Here's why. There are HUGE differences with regard to sources, quality, and quantity. The best source of omega 3 oils is from cold water and saltwater fish such as sardines, anchovies, and salmon.
WHY TAKE OMEGA 3s in Nepean?
It is a type of fat that you genetically require - raw material to help your body work properly. When you hear the word essential that means that you can't produce it in your body though it is essential for proper function. So, you must get it from an external source, like supplements.
WHAT DO THEY DO?
OMEGA 3 is a fat that is in all cell membranes. It is very essential for the immune system, nervous system development, and regulation. It is also very important in the growth and development of newborns, helps with the growth of skin and bones, and decreases inflammation. We need to supplement because OMEGA 3 is no longer in our diets. The animals we eat are more grain-fed and the grass-fed animals lose the OMEGA 3's after 6 weeks and only contain trace amounts are found when they make it to your kitchen.
The quality of the OMEGA 3 has a lot to do with the extraction process of the oil from its' source as well as the elimination of PCBs, dioxins, furans, mercury, and other heavy metals. So, you want an extraction process that can remove unwanted junk while still preserving the quality of the oil.
When determining the right amount to take, here is what you need to know. At the very least, an average adult should be taking no less than 1000 EPA per day. Notice that I did not say 1000 mg of OMEGA 3 or fish oil per day but specifically EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid). Any two different capsules or even liquids can have different levels of EPA. Some will have 70 mg and some will have 750 mg, so the amount you take will depend on how much there is in each capsule or spoonful.
WHY EPA?
It is the heart and soul of fish oil. EPA helps with decreasing inflammation and is always under constant demand in your body so it needs to be replenished. EPA and DHA (which is more important for nursing moms and younger children for development and growth.)
I hope that this sheds some light on the difference between fish oils sold in department stores versus the ones sold in our office.
